Help Amanda Help Nepalese Burns Victims!

Story

Globally, there are more than 300,000 deaths annually as a result of fire-related burns. 95% of these occur in low and middle income countries with illiteracy, poverty, and high population density as contributing factors.

Burns-related deaths are only part of the problem, however. Many more people develop permanent disabilities and disfigurements from contractures (where the burn scar thickens and tightens over time). Most of these victims are women and children who suffer stigma as a result of being 'different'. TheIr disability also affects their capacity to earn money and be a productive member of their family and community.

I have joined a volunteer team of 23 surgeons, anaesthitists and nurses to visit Benapa in Nepal in March/April this year. Over two weeks, we will treat 40 patients, giving them the gift of life-changing surgery that they would otherwise not have the opportunity to receive. In past years, the team has treated individuals like Saroj (aged 7), who after being caught in a forest fire was unable to straighten his legs or walk. Saroj received two operations by our team in 2010, and can now walk. He has great prospects for a healthy and productive future.

We receive no government funding, and all team members are volunteers who donate their time and expertise to support the program. We are responsible for contributing financially to the program. Half of your donation will go directly to the costs of performing the surgery, and the other half will help me to use the skills and nursing expertise I have to help burns victims in Nepal (i.e. will help me cover my costs!). Any donation is greatly appreciated, and is tax deductible.

Thank you for your support, and please give generously!

Kind regards, Amanda.
